Ascension of the Lord

Bernardino Gandino

“‘But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samar′ia and to the end of the earth.’ And when he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.” – Acts 1:8-9

There is a remarkable similiarity in several images of our Lord rising from the tomb and of our Lord ascending into heaven. In these cases, the image portrays our Lord moving upward and forward; in the Resurrection, He steps forth from the grave; in the Ascension, He steps toward the Father. Consider the motion of Christ, the adoration of the crowd, how they were perhaps unaware that they were in a sense losing Him, but also gaining the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, God can take something – even a very good thing – away from us. But the Good God always has something better in store, even if we ourselves, cannot perceive it yet.
