The Crucified Christ
Diego Velázquez
1632
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16
The Crucified Christ is a startling, uncomfortable, and yet familiar and consoling image. Jesus is the innocent victim who suffered and died for our sins. Although He hangs in darkness, He remains the source of light. His body has an ephemeral glow, while His peaceful face emits a slightly brighter light. Although He suffers, He chooses it and therefore radiates peace, even invitation, for us to look upon Him and be consoled by His love.
