Joshua passing the River Jordan with the Ark of the Covenant
By Benjamin West (1738-1820)
1800
“And while all Israel were passing over on dry ground, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, until all the nation finished passing over the Jordan.” – Joshua 3:17
The journey to the Promised Land has been long and difficult; in fact, many have not survived the journey. And yet, God’s people finally enter into the Promised Land through water on dry ground, with pomp and celebration. Prayerfully consider how long the journey has been from Baptism until now, how we are constantly reminded of our own passing through water with Holy Water fonts placed carefully at the entrances of churches. Our Lord has been with us every step of the way, and we pray will lead us to Himself, our heavenly homeland.
