Samuel Anoints David

Artist Unknown

3rd Century

“Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.” – 1 Samuel 16:13

In this painting, King David is only slightly taller than his compatriots, but significantly smaller than Samuel. God, who is above, chooses us, anoints us through His ministers, to be sharers in Christ’s kingship. When we receive Chrism (holy oil) in Confirmation, we too, like King David, receive the Holy Spirit. Chrism is composed of two parts: oil which signifies the grace of the Holy Spirit, and a fragrant balm, which signifies that we who receive the Chrism, are a pleasant odor to Christ. (Cf. 2 Cor 2:15.)
